: 11 Months Series

11 Months Series chronicles almost a year in 2020 stranded on a coastal town of Uruguay due to the C19 pandemic. I stayed in La Pedrera, Departamento de Rocha, Uruguay, population 220 people year round, 5 months with my mother and 6 months alone. I encountered so much kindness. I am very grateful to all the generosity of local persons in La Pedrera that hosted us, and helped us in a myriad of ways.

I experienced making as an ocean force that gave me oxygen and strength. Materials came from a small store that operated inside the local rural grammar school, tracing paper, pencils and inks. I had brought my nibs from the States.

I made drawings, books and studies everyday. It gave me sustenance. These works reflect inner and outer weather, my daily walks by the sea shore, my experience of uncertainty. I traced the place where I was. I drew it. I dreamed with it, I learned to love it, and to some extent I befriended the uncertainty.

“Yet, he has returned to his mother sea only on her own terms. He cannot control or change the ocean, as in his brief tenancy of earth, he has subdued and plundered the continents. In the artificial world of his cities and towns, he often forgets the true nature of his planet and the long vistas of its history, in which the existence of the race of men has occupied a mere moment of time.” – Rachel Carson
